Dust mite allergy

A dust mite is an arachnid, invisible to the naked eye, measuring between 170 and 500 microns. There are nearly 50,000 species, but only the house dust mite is allergenic to humans. Responsible for 60% of allergy cases, these tiny creatures are not directly allergenic; rather, it is the proteins present in their droppings and the particles from their carcasses that trigger allergic reactions. To live and thrive, dust mites need warmth, humidity, and darkness. They feed on flakes, such as dead skin cells and hair, which is why mattresses are their preferred habitat.

The symptoms of dust mite allergy can vary from person to person. However, here are the most common symptoms:

  • Sneezing
  • Nasal congestion and/or runny nose
  • Itching, watering or redness of the eyes
  • A feeling of tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing
  • Wheezing and/or coughing
  • Protect your mattresses, duvet and pillows with a anti-mites and filtering cover
  • Keep the room temperature at a maximum of 19°C.
  • Maintain the humidity level between 40% and 55%.
  • Air out the room every day for at least 15 minutes.
  • Opt for a slatted bed base made of wood or metal rather than an upholstered bed base.
  • Wash your bedding regularly (see the question on washing frequency).
  • Avoid dust traps such as knick-knacks, stuffed animals, open wardrobes or closets, etc.
  • Wash your child's cuddly toy regularly in the washing machine.
  • Avoid having plants in the bedroom.
  • Avoid textiles such as curtains and rugs. If this is not possible, opt for washable textiles and wash them regularly.
  • Avoid having pets in the room.
  • Replace carpets with washable flooring. If this is not possible, vacuum the carpet regularly and thoroughly with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter.

In France, anti-dust mite covers do not have a LPP code that would allow for their reimbursement. Therefore, they are not currently covered by social security. ProtecSom anti-dust mite covers undergo no chemical treatment, whether acaricidal or otherwise. In fact, using an acaricide does not provide direct and immediate relief from dust mite allergies. Even though anti-dust mite treatments eliminate dust mites, dust mite allergies are not caused by the mites themselves, but by a protein found in their dead bodies and droppings. Even after the mites die, these allergenic particles remain in the bedding. This is why dust mite-treated covers are not effective against the symptoms of dust mite allergies.

threads count per square centimeter is often presented as a quality criterion, but in reality, it's not what determines a cover's anti-mites . It's the size of the fabric's pores —those tiny holes between the threads —that plays a key role in filtering allergens.

All our ranges of anti-mites have passed the vapor resistance test. Vapor resistance assesses how difficult it is for perspiration to pass through a fabric. A product that offers good breathability has low evaporative resistance, which should not exceed 5 m².Pa/W.

ProtecSom anti-dust mite covers completely envelop your bedding (mattress, duvet, pillow, etc.) and close with a zipper protected by a wide flap.

To ensure the effectiveness of anti-dust mite covers and facilitate their installation, it is essential to never choose a cover smaller than the bedding item you wish to protect. Therefore, it is crucial to know the precise dimensions of your bedding to select a suitable cover.

We recommend using a tape measure to measure your bedding:

  • For a mattress: measure the length, width, and height (as the height of a mattress is not always very consistent across the entire mattress, it is necessary to add 2 cm to the measured height)
  • For duvets and pillows: measure the length and width
  • For ergonomic pillows (thickness): measure the length, width, and height. Since our pillowcases don't specify a height measurement, simply add this measurement to the length and width to get the correct size.
  • For a bolster pillow: measure the length and diameter

Once you have measured all your bedding items, choose the closest size from those we offer, but never choose a smaller size.

Examples:

  • I measured my mattress and it's exactly 140x190x19 cm. As mentioned previously, add 2 cm to the measured height, giving a corrected measurement of 140x190x21 cm. Therefore, you will need to choose a 140x190x21 cm mattress cover from the Noxaalon® range or a 140x190x22 cm cover from the Texaal® Cotton range.
  • I measured my ergonomic pillow and it's 40x60x9 cm. As explained previously, add the measured height to the length and width, which gives a corrected measurement of 49x69 cm. Therefore, you'll need to choose a pillowcase measuring 50x70 cm, regardless of the range you select.

Tip: When measuring your mattress, measure it at the ends, where it is thickest.

  • Via PayPal: When you choose your payment method on our online store, you have the option to select payment in installments via PayPal. The process continues directly on your PayPal account.
    • PayPal offers its customers the option to pay in four installments at no extra cost. In this case, the total amount is spread over a three-month period. Payment in four installments with PayPal is available for purchases between €30 and €2,000. Installing my anti-dust mite covers

anti-mites covers completely encase your bedding, creating an impenetrable barrier against dust mite allergens. Therefore, the condition of your bedding is irrelevant, and you won't need to invest in a new mattress. However, before installing the cover, thoroughly vacuum your mattress using a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter, ensuring the room is well-ventilated before, during, and after vacuuming. If possible, we recommend wearing an FFP2 mask during this process to minimize the inhalation of dust mite particles. For more detailed instructions on installing your cover, please consult our advice sheet.

We recommend washing your cover before its first use. This will allow Noxaalon® covers to soften, and Texaal® covers to begin shrinking (shrinkage allowances are taken into account in the making of your cover).

Before installation, we recommend washing the cover in the washing machine. Ensure the room is well-ventilated before, during, and after installation. Wearing an FFP2 filter mask during installation will reduce the inhalation of dust mite particles.

Proceed as follows:

  1. Strip your mattress, duvet and pillow bare.
  2. Shake duvets and pillows vigorously, preferably outdoors.
  3. Wash them, if possible at 60°C. All our covers can be tumble dried.
  4. Thoroughly vacuum the mattress on all sides using a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter.
  5. Insert each item into its cover, spread the flap under the closure and close the anti-dust mite cover.
  6. Put your traditional sheets (fitted sheet, duvet cover and pillowcase) back on top of the anti-dust mite covers.

anti-mites covers have been minimized to reduce the risk of allergen leakage. A cover with fewer openings is more effective against dust mites , as explained in our advice sheet " Why do our full anti-mites have smaller openings?" ProtecSom anti-dust mite covers and maintenance

  • You can machine wash your anti-dust mite cover with your usual detergent.
  • All ProtecSom covers are designed to withstand repeated washing at 60°C (100 wash/dry cycles for Texaal® covers and 50 cycles for Noxaalon® covers).
  • ProtecSom covers are compatible with tumble dryers.
  • The use of fabric softener, bleach or any other bleaching agent is not recommended for allergy sufferers, as is the use of solvents such as perchloride-ethylene or petroleum solvents (mineral spirits).
  • It is recommended to wash Noxaalon® covers with the closure closed, while Texaal® covers should be washed with the closure open, as indicated on the label.
  • It is not advisable to iron your anti-dust mite covers.
  • It is best not to entrust your cover to the dry cleaners, as the chemicals used can be potentially allergenic.

After-sales service and repairs

Yes, this is normal because cotton is a natural fiber that shrinks with each wash. The shrinkage rate of Texaal® Cotton after washing is known before manufacturing, which is why a margin of between 1% and 6.5% (depending on the fabric batch) is included in the cover's production. Your cover will reach its final size after several washes.

For Texaal® Cotton mattress covers, an extra safety margin is added to the length and width to facilitate installation and ensure effectiveness.

If you wish to exchange your cover:

  • You have 14 days from the date of receipt of the products to return them to us in perfect condition and unopened, in order to request a refund or exchange.
  • Our anti-dust mite covers are medical devices; therefore, opened products cannot be resold and are not returnable.
  • You will only be responsible for the return shipping costs, while we will cover the reshipping costs.
  • In the event of a change in dimensions between the covers being exchanged, the difference in price between the covers will be taken into account.
  • Please note that custom-made products are neither returnable nor exchangeable.
  • No returns can be processed without prior contact with our after-sales service, during which we will provide you with a return number.

In the event of a manufacturing defect, you are automatically covered by the warranty. Texaal® covers are covered by a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, while Noxaalon® covers are covered by a 10-year warranty against manufacturing defects. In this case, we will cover the shipping costs.

If the cover is repairable, it will be returned to you after being processed in our sewing workshops. This process usually takes 48 to 72 hours after we receive the package.

If the cover cannot be repaired, we will exchange it for a new one.

Please note that the warranty only covers manufacturing defects and does not apply to damage caused by misuse or improper maintenance conditions.
